February 28 .. the last day of February and our last morning of waking up at Myrtle Beach!!!
5:22 AM .. 6:22 Eastern time and we're up and ready to hit the road. 63 degrees already!!!! Dark clouds and we had heavy rain in the night but it's not raining right now!!!! I'm glad we took our last walks on the beach yesterday because everything is very wet and it's very windy so far this morning!!!!
First stop .. KRISPY KREME .. a little something to tide us over until we stop for Breakfast down the road .. LOL!!!
Eventually we somehow Got off of 17 and onto 521 north??? 521 North takes you through many little tiny towns that are few and far between and Kenny did a lot of grumbling because none of these little
burgs we were going through had any place to stop to eat .. not even a McDonalds .. LOL!!! Just saw a sign that says 10 miles to 95 South .. Wooooo Hoooo!!!!
8:00
.. Found a McDonalds at last .. LOL!!! Manning, SC!! Sausage and Egg McMuffin and Coffee!!! Funny .. Ken went
to the bathroom .. was peeing in the urinal and in came a woman to change
the trash bag .. LOL LOL LOL!!!!!
On 95 South at last!!! 117 miles to Savannah!! Temp 72
11:20 .. We have made it to Georgia!! 78 degrees!!
Lots of marshes along the way ..
12:06 .. We have arrived ..
I found a video tour of Fort Pulaski on You Tube that was taped the same day we were there!! If you click on the link below and watch the video tour I think the pictures I posted will make more sense to you!!! We had a terrific tour guide who told us sooooooooo much but here it is a couple of days later and I can't remember half of it .. LOL!!!
Fort Pulaski is located on Cockspur Island and you can see the Cockspur lighthouse from the island but right now the trail that leads you to the point where you can get a good view of the lighthouse is closed because of damage from Hurrican Matthew!!!
The pictures above were all taken as we were walking from the parking lot to the Welcome Center and then to the fort itself!!!
Ken is watching the jumping fish in the moat!!!
Storage area for gun powder .. below the hills all around the fort are these areas ..
This huge thing is a Fig tree / plant / bush ..
The stairs to get to the top of the wall .. very scarey climbing .. YIKES!!! Thank Goodness we found a better set of stairs for getting back down!!!
Damage from Hurricane Matthew ..
We thought we were following the trail to get to the point where we could see the lighthouse .. LOL!! We found out later the trail to the lighthouse was closed because of the damage along it!!!
The following pictures show the damage that was done to the fort on the day it was taken over ... for me this was the most touching part of seeing the fort!!! This damage was caused by cannons of course!!!
The first part of the sentence in the pic below says the fort was hit by over 5,000 shots .....YIKES!!!
The link below will take you to a page with LOTS of information about the battle at Fort Pulaski ..
THE SIEGE OF FORT PULASKI!!!
THE SIEGE OF FORT PULASKI!!!
After leaving Fort Pulaski we went to Tybee Island to see the Tybee Lighthouse .. sad to say it is not open on Tuesdays .. wouldn't you know it!!! However, I did get a few pictures ..
For more on the lighthouse click on the link below .. once I got to this page I saw we couldn't have gone inside the lighthouse anyway as they were making repairs!! Be sure to click on the tab that says HISTORY when you get to this page ..
Just one of the many many beach type homes on Tybee Island ..
Back to Savannah ..
The small white spot out in the water in these 2 pictures is the Cockspur Lighthouse .. best I could do .. LOL!!!
SAVANNAH ..
That's 3:38 Missouri time ..
There just happened to be a one of our favorite places to eat located fairly close to where we would be staying so of course that's where we stopped for Supper!!!
And then off to our "homebase" for a couple of nights .. actually in Pooler, Georgia .. about 12 miles past Savannah and $50.00 a night cheaper .. LOL!!!
Ken's all settled in with his book and I'm getting ready to sit down in front of that desk and start downloading pictures .. LOL!!!
It was great even just driving through Savannah .. I can hardly wait
to get back the next morning to hop on a trolley and check things
out!!!!!
Hey Guys, I really enjoyed this one. Irene
